58.     “Usude-ku” and “Chondara”

[Okinawa] ＜Folk Performance＞

“Usude-ku” is a circle dance, performed with Japanese taiko drum and singing.  It has been inherited as a part of a festival which every woman from the village participates.  “Chondara” literally means “Taro coming from Kyoto,” but it means Taro, a strolling entertainer himself, as well as the particular kind of artistry he created. They were based in Shuri until the beginning of Meiji.  It is said that the origin of the “Awase no Chondara” started in 1906 for the village’s celebration.

One hundred years ago, there was an pavilion in Osaka, which displayed living human beings.  Uchinanchu was one of the displayed.  It illustrates the reality of Okinawa, history and human beings.  SheishinChinen’s play “The human race pavilion” will be recited by MasaneTsukayama from Seinen Theater Company with his native Uchina-guchi dialect.  There will be post-performance talk by the performer.
